A whole family is plunged into a crisis when it emerges that they have been living a sham. By chance 14-year-old Jenny discovers that she has not been told the truth about something so fundamental as her identity.
One day Jenny decides on the spur of the moment to go and find her father's grave - and it is a great shock when she discovers that there is no grave. Determined to discover the truth, she then finds out that her father isn't dead at all... he's still alive! But when she tracks him down she is in for another shock - he isn't really her father! Her mother Johanna and her sister Caroline stick to their lies, but Jenny refuses to give up. And gradually she establishes the rest of the truth: Johanna is not in fact her mother!
The realisation that her entire life has been a lie almost drives Jenny out of her mind. Who is her real mother? But when she succeeds in getting to the bottom of this secret as well, Jenny finds the truth even more of a shock that she could possibly have expected.
It now becomes very hard for Jenny to accept the true situation in emotional terms. But when she realises that Johanna, who has been a "mother" to her all her life, can't get over the fact that they have been living a sham either, Jenny starts trying to rescue the family by showing her genuine feelings for Johanna and Caroline. In the end, though, this unusual family secret ends up almost causing a death.
